The bangalore Palace is located at Jayamahal Rd, Armane Nagar,Bangalore. The Palace was built in 1887 and built by Woodeyar Dynasty. The Palace is adorned with magnificent woodcarvings and Tudor-style architecture on the inside.Garrett had already built a mansion there in 1862 but Wadiyar wanted to redo it in the Tudor style. He started renovating it in April 1874, replicating Windsor Castle’s fortified towers, battlements and turrets complete with clinging ivy. Covering an area of 45,000 sq ft, most of the 35 rooms were bedrooms with small, compact restrooms. The renovation was completed in 1876 at a cost of Rs 1, 98,158.The palace holds resemblance to the medieval castles that were built in Normandy and England. Once surrounded by beautiful gardens, now the palace is not what it used to be. But, it still succeeds in attracting tourists.
The interiors were just as English. The furniture, which was neo-classical, Victorian and Edwardian in style, was designed by Lazarus & Company. And every detail of the Palace is testimony to the fact that the Wadiyars were truly connoisseurs of art and architecture , whether it was the painted and carved roofs above their heads or the intricate flooring with its multi-coloured motifs that they walked on. The upholstery, brass inlaid rosewood doors, stained glass windows, chandeliers made from Belgium crystal, paintings, hunting artifacts – everything was fit for a king.
Once surrounded by beautiful gardens, the palace has now lost much of its original charm. However, it still succeeds in attracting tourists. Fortified towers, Gothic windows, battlements and turrets lend a great degree of magnificence to the Bangalore Palace of India. Mainly constructed of wood, it boasts of splendid carvings and paintings. Today the palace serves as the venue for various exhibitions, concerts and cultural programs held in the city. The ground floor of the Bangalore Palace comprises of a massive open square.
Architecture of  Bangalore Palace

The architecture of the Palace is not just Tudor. It is also Victorian Gothic and was influenced by the architecture that one sees in Regency London. That type of architecture was popularised by John Nash between 1800 and 1820,” says Michael Ludgrove, the curator, Royal Collections, Bangalore Palace. Ludgrove believes that the Maharaja may have been inspired by pictures of Windsor Castle and that it is unlikely he actually visited the London landmark. The gardens were designed by famed German botanist Gustav Krumbiegel, the architect of Lalbagh and government botanist at London’s Kew Gardens. Plants were chosen carefully to ensure that there was colour all through the year.
The square is full of granite seats that are adorned with fluorescent blue ceramic tiles. Along with the courtyard is a ballroom, where private parties of the King used to be held. As we move to the first floor, the foremost thing that comes into view is an ornate room, known as the Durbar Hall. The King used this hall for addressing the assembly. Mounted on the hall is a colossal elephant head, while its walls are ornamented with exquisite paintings. One of the walls of the Durbar Hall has a set of windows that are decorated with stained glass.
History of Bangalore Palace
The Bangalore Palace is an imperial remnant of the bygone era. Located in Bangalore, India, this palace was built by Chamaraja Wodeyar, Maharaja of Mysore in 1887. Chamaraja Wodeyar visited England and was greatly inspired by the Windsor Castle in London. Keeping the Tudor style architecture of the Windsor Castle in mind Wodeyar built Bangalore Palace in India along similar lines.
Surrounded by beautiful gardens the Palace has towers with gothic windows, battlements and turrets. It is largely constructed of wood plus is known for its carving and paintings. The wonderful door panel at the entrance leads to grand interiors of the palace. Situated in the heart of the city, between Jayamahal and Sadashivanagar areas, this Palace is spread over 430 acres. The interiors of the Palace have sophisticatedly carved woodwork, breathtaking floral motifs, cornices and beautiful relief paintings on its ceilings. However the entry to the Palace is restricted you may just marvel at the exteriors of the monument.
This Palace is quite a fascinating place as it flaunts turreted parapets, battlements, fortified towers and arches. The magnificent royal grandeur of the Palace will leave you awe struck. The Tudor architecture surrounded by Indian urban scenery makes the whole thing worth exploring.
Today the Bangalore Palace belongs to the Mysore royal family and has also undergone many renovations. Various exhibitions, concerts and cultural programs are held in the Palace grounds from time to time.
