The growth of the kannada film industry can be attributed to veterans like Nagathilli chandrashekhar,Girish Kasaravalli,T.S. Nagathbhara and M.s. Sathyu. On the hiyest pedestal of  the industry hoewer, stands film star Rajklumar. He started off as Mutturaju,a theatre artist ,and was discovered by HLN Simha. He soon rose to legendary status and began to be addressed as annavaru meaning "big brother" in Kannada. His popular movies are Bangarada Manushya,Gandhadha Gudi,Kasturivasa,Sannadi Appanna,Babruvahana,Shankar- Guru and Akasmiks.Rajkumar has been conferred the Dada Saheb Phalke, the Padmabhushana and the Karnataka Ratana awards.

The 1970s and the 1980s proved to be the golden age of Kannada cinema. This era saw the rise of alternate cinema or parallel cinema as we know it.In Kannada cinema ,the parallel movement was spearheaded by Girish karnad, B.V.
