More Information about Bangalore Fort

The Bangalore Fort is located at Magadi town of Bangalore,Karnataka. The Fort was founded by Kempe Gowdain  in 1537feudatory chief of the Vijayanagar Empire and the founder of Bangalore city. In 1761 the fort was reconstructed in stone by the Raja of Mysore, Haidar Ali (c.1722 - 1782) and was an important stronghold during his reign and that of his successor and eldest son, Tipu Sultan (1753 -1799). On either side of the Palace are beautiful gardens, which lead to its main entrance. The fort in itself is worth just staring at, due to its uncommon oval shape.A temple of Ganesha was built by him inside the fort, which symbolizes the religious tolerance of Tipu. He was a great patron of Sri Ranganatha temple in Srirangapatnam. While most of the fort was dismantled during the British occupation and later, one can still see the parts of once a majestic and historical structure. The Delhi gate, the point of entry of British troops during the fall still stands and is a brilliant example of Islamic architecture. This fort is a small section left from Tipu sultan days and the wars against the British. Small but interesting, you'll cover it in less then 10 minutes - should combine with other activities in the area (near by to the city market and Tipu's summer palace).Another major attraction of the fort is the art gallery where it holds thousands of historical photos, delicate carvings, paintings including those of maharajahs and viceroys.

History of  Bangalore Fort

The Bangalore Fort was built by Kempe Gowda and expanded by Tippu Sultan. The fort has rooms that were used by Tipu Sultan and his father, Hyder Ali to contain British prisoners in the 1780s. Well-fortified by Tipu, the fort has been a mute witness to the Mysore wars which saw the fort finally being captured by The British East India Company in 1791. It once boasted of many gates but today only the exquisitely carved Delhi Gate remains on the Krishnarajendra Road.
It still bears the three original massive iron knobs and a marble plaque that marks a breach in the doorway that betrayed the fort to the British. The Bangalore Palace is a 120-year old historical monument of Bangalore, built by the then first Principal of the present day Central College, Rev. Garrett. It was purchased by the Maharaja of Mysore, Chamaraja Wodeyar, in 1884. Deeply inspired by the Windsor castle, he incorporated in the palace all the features of the Tudor or the English-gothic style of architecture that include fortified towers, gothic windows, battlements, turreted parapets and arches.

Architecture of  Bangalore Fort

The Fort is built as per Islamic style with an inscription bearing the words “Abode of Happiness”, with gardens on either side leading to the palace. With in premises of the fort lies a Ganesha temple which depicts and represents Tipu’s religious tolerance and dates back to the year 1790.The gate also depicts Karnataka architecture with beautiful carvings of Peacocks, Lotus and Elephants as well as half-elephant and half-bird motifs. Renowned for its intrinsically carved arches inspired by Islamic architecture, and for the still standing Ganapati temple built in the 16th century, the fort was originally designed with four gates that served as outlets, one pointing in each direction. Only the North gate of the fort remains to be breached, persisting on Krishnarajendra Road, with a marble plaque marking the spot of breach in the fort wall, which lead to its annexation by the British. Also worth looking at is a nearby wooden palace of Tipu Sultan, which served as his summer home, as well as his armoury that is now preserved in the old fort area.
