Cases of mucomycosis in the second phase of corona have increased across Gujarat. Regarding the status of cases in Asarwa Civil Hospital in Ahmedabad, senior doctor Belaben Prajapati said that at present about 20 new cases are being registered in the civil hospital every day. At present, 117 patients are being treated at the Civil Hospital. While 6 to 7 patients are undergoing mucormycosis surgery daily.

Infections are more common in the nose and eyes. Patients have lost eyesight in 5 percent of cases. While in 10% of cases the palate of the patients has to be removed. So far 4 patients ’eyes and 4 patients’ locks have been removed at Asarwa Civil Hospital. He further advised the people to seek immediate treatment if they have any symptoms like headache, swelling in the eyes, difficulty in swallowing, swelling in the mouth and diabetic patients should take special care.

Rarely seen mucormycosis is a serious disease caused by a fungus. Mucormycosis fungi are found everywhere in the ecosystem. Especially found in soils. Mucormycosis fungus enters the human body through respiratory or skin lesions. The fungus of mucormycosis, which enters a person with a weakened immune system, dominates the body and begins to spread.

People in high risk groups such as uncontrolled diabetes, cancer, organ transplants, drug users, long-term steroid users, taking moist oxygen, malnourished, underdeveloped newborns, stem cell transplants, skin lesions That a person with burnt skin is more likely to develop mucormycosis

Symptoms of mucormycosis disease

Swelling of one side of the face

Headache

Nasal congestion or sinus problems

A lump in the mouth or a build up of black lumps in the nostrils

Eye pain, loss of vision

Fever, cough, chest pain

Shortness of breath, abdominal pain

Nausea or vomiting

Symptoms such as intestinal bleeding are seen

How can this disease be prevented?

Wear N95 mask to prevent mucormycosis

Avoid exposure to excessive dust
Immediately clean the wound on the skin with soap and water.
