History of  Infant Jesus Church  Bangalore

In the mid sixties, the Sacred Heart Parish of Bangalore extended to areas like Somanahalli, now known as Viveknagar which were faraway for pastoral care. So, Rev. Fr.Paul Kinatukara, the parish priest of the Sacred Heart Church felt the need for a separate parish for areas around Somanahalli and undertook a vigorous unsuccessful search for a suitable land. One day as the Parish Priest was walking, he entered a garden in Somanahalli. It was a well maintained rose garden. He was impressed. "If only I could get this land for the Church" he wondered. "Oh! How nice it could be". But then, he felt that it was impossible, because over a lakh of roses were exported per week from there. However he felt a mysterious power overcoming him and made him resolve on the spot to buy this land at any cost. With this frame of mind, he returned home. As days rolled by, on suggestion, he prayed to the Infant Jesus of Prague [Nine hour Novena] for two months for help in his quest for land. His prayers were immediately answered and the rose garden was brought for a windfall price. 18th April, 1969, the foundation for a new church was laid by Most Rev. Dr.S. Lourduswamy, the then Archbishop of Bangalore. May 1971, Rev.Fr. L.Peter was appointed as the first parish priest of the new church, who took steps to celebrate the holy mass on the newly acquired land, brought the Infant Jesus statue from Sacred Heart church and installed it in an improvised old tent and thus began the "Tent Church" which lasted for over eight years. The newly acquired land, popularly known as the "Rose garden" surrounded by thick vegetation was infested with snakes and poisonous reptiles and with no street lights was plunged in darkness at night. All this did not deter the faithful who flocked to the church. 1972, this new parish was canonically erected by the Most Rev. Dr. P. Arokiaswamy, the then Archbishop of Bangalore. 1974, the local authorities turned down the plan for the new Church for want of the approval of the Bangalore Development Authority, but Fr.Peter patiently toiled on. 26th October 1977, the powerful and miraculous intervention of Infant Jesus finally enabled him to get the approval and the entire development charges of Rs.50,000 was completely waived off, which was the first ever waiver in the history of the Bangalore development authority. Since all the events occurred on Thursday, the day was dedicated to Infant Jesus. 29th June 1979, the Most Rev. Dr.D.S.Lourduswamy, Secretary of the Sacred Congregation for the Evangelisation of the people, came from Rome, blessed and opened the new Infant Jesus Church in the presence of a very large gathering of devotees of different faiths.
June 22nd 1989, Infant Jesus Shrine, adjacent to the church, was blessed by His Grace, the Most Rev. Dr.Alphonsus Mathias, Archbishop of Bangalore and opened to the faithful to honour and glorify the divine Infant Jesus of Prague. The Little King has been enthroned as the Great King of the world to assist His subjects in their trials, difficulties, and crosses.
He Who Himself has suffered so much desires to assist those who come to Him. He wishes to attract all hearts to His own through the attractiveness and simplicity of His Divine Infancy. The devotion to Infant Jesus has become widespread and the Infant Jesus Shrine is now known as the place of pilgrimage, miracles and Divine solace not only in this state, but across the country.

The Bull temple of Bangalore is dedicated to Nandi Bull, the vahana (vehicle) of Lord Shiva. Situated in Basavanagudi, this temple has been built in the Dravidian style of architecture. Kempe Gowda, the founder of Bangalore, got the Bull temple built during his time. This temple counts amongst the oldest temples of the city and draws devotees from all over the country. Read on to know more about the Bull Temple of Bangalore, India.
There is huge idol of Nandi Bull inside the temple, measuring 4.5 m in height and 6.5 m in length. This idol is said to have been carved out of a single rock. The bull also has a small iron plate on its head. As per the tradition, this plate prevents the bull from growing. Providing a great backdrop to the statue are the idols of God Surya and Goddess Chandra, on their chariots. It is believed that the Vishva Bharti River originates at the feet of this statue.

The legend goes that the Bull Temple was built to appease a bull that used to consume and destroy all the groundnuts and peanuts cultivated in this area. It is also said that after the temple was built, the bull stopped damaging the crop. As a celebration of this incident, the farmers of Basavanagudi organized a Groundnut Fair (Kadalekai Parase), near the temple. This fair continues till date and is attended by the people of Bangalore in large numbers.
Nandi - the Bull

The temple boasts of a huge image of Nandi (bull) that commemorates the mount of Lord Shiva. The giant image extends to 5 meters in height and 6 meters in its length. The monolithic bull is believed to be much older than the temple itself. The image of 'Nandi' has been made out of a single granite stone. Initially, the color of the bull was grey and gradually, it turned black as devotees apply coconut oil to it. As per the sayings, the river Vishwa Bharathi originates from the feet of 'Nandi, the bull.

Behind this enormous image, there is a Shiva lingam. Like most of the other temples of India, Bull Temple also has a story behind its establishment. It is believed that the temple was constructed to pacify a bull, who tried to gnaw away the entire groundnut grown in the fields nearby. It is also thought that the statue keeps on growing in size further and further. One can see a trident on the forehead of the bull. It is said that the trident was placed here as per the advise of Lord Shiva, to prevent the bull from growing further.

The architectural style of the temple rejuvenates the notion of Dravidian architecture. In the vicinity of this temple, there is a shrine of Lord Ganesha by the name of Dodda Ganesha Temple. The unique feature about this shrine is that the huge image of the Lord is made out of 110 kilograms of butter after every four years. It is amazing to know that the butter never melts. After every four years, the butter deity is broken and distributed amongst the devotees.
Architecture of  Bull-Nandi  Temple

The temple built by Kempe Gowda, a typical example of the Dravidian-style temple, is situated in Basavanagudi. The temple has a huge monolithic bull 4.5m tall and 6m long. It is believed that the source of the river Vishwa Bharathi originates from the feet of the Nandi. The bull has a small iron plate on its head to prevent it, as tradition says, from growing. Also there is a Ganesh temple, with a large deity made of 110 kilos of butter. The deity of butter is broken up and distributed every four years. In Kannada, Basava means bull, which gives the name Basavanagudi to the locality. This is one of the oldest temples in Bangalore situated in basavanagudi dedicated to Nandi, the mount of Lord Shiva. Kempe Gowda built this temple in the 16th century. The magnificent Nandi, 15 feet tall and over 20 feet long has been carved out of single granite rock. Farmers offer the first groundnuts to the sacred bull. It has a grey granite sacred bull, Nandi, after which the temple has been named. The sacred bull has been carved out of a single granite block. It measures 4.57 mt in height and 6.10 mt in length.
The Bhoganandiswara temple at the foothills of Nandi Hills goes back to the period of the Banas, Cholas, Hoysalas and the Vijayanagar Kings.. Bhoganandiswara, Umamaheswara and Arunachaleswara are enshrined here. The kalyanamandapa is of great beauty here. The Yoganandiswara temple atop the hill goes back to the Chola period. It received extensive patronage from the Vijayanagar Kings. The pillars and metalwork deserve special mention. The image has been carved out of single granite rock. The original colour of Nandi bull was grey which has now turned black due to the application of coconut oil by the devotees. The statue of the bull has been carved out of a single rock.
Festival

Bull Temple observes a Kadalekaye Parishe (Groundnut Fair) every year. It is held in the month of November or December. In the ceremony, the farmers offer their first harvest of groundnut to Nandi. It is kind of farmer's appreciation and gratitude towards the Bull, Nandi. The sheer size of the Bull attracts people from far and near to this shrine of religious significance.

 About Lalbagh Botanical Garden

The Lalbagh Botanical Garden is Located at 4 Km From M.G Road Bangalore Karnataka. The Garden was built in 1760 and founded by Hyder Ali.A well known botanical garden, Lalbagh Botanical Garden is one of the perfect places to spend a few refreshing moments amidst nature. A prominent tourist attraction in Bangalore, it used to earlier known as the Rose and Cypress Garden. With the literal meaning as the ‘The Red Garden’, Lalbagh is known of its exclusive variety of flowers and plants it has. It has been adorned with more than 1000 species of flora including various exquisite tropical plants, trees and herbs. This garden was originally the dream work of Hyder Ali, the then Head of Mysore State. However, this project was finished by the son of Tipu Sultan.
It comprises the largest collection of India’s rare tropical plants, many ancient trees, a decorated flower clock and an imaginary lawn surrounded by Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs. Moreover, tourists can enjoy the beauty of a glasshouse, which is inspired by London’s Crystal Palace, one of Kempegowda’s watch towers, a peaceful lake and a topiary park as well. The botanical garden is internationally famous for its scientific study and conservation of plants. For botany students, the place offers ample learning opportunities as rare species of flora are preserved here.
The lush garden is renowned internationally for horticulture studies and for its well-maintained treasure trove of plant species. Today, the garden has about 1,854 species of plants. It is a beautiful public space for healthy recreation bringing people close to nature. Lalbagh has well-laid out roads, paths, seating spaces and of course plants.
The centre stage of Lalbagh is the charming Glass House that was made for acclimatizing the exotic species. It also holds the famous biannual flower shows in January and August.
History of Lalbagh

The history of this iconic garden of southern India is a long one. The Lalbagh Garden was initially commissioned by Hyder Ali, the Sultan of Mysore, in 1760 – about a year before he made himself ruler of the kindgom by overthrowing the then Maharaja. Soon after Hyder Ali’s death in 1782, his son Tipu Sultan took over as the Sultan of Mysore. He continued with the construction of Lalbagh and imported rare flowering plants from many parts of the world including Persia, Turkey, Mauritius, Afghanistan, and even South Africa. Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan’s love of Nature is evident from the number of flower gardens they have commissioned across the erstwhile state of Mysore. In its early days, it is believed, that the highlight of the Lalbagh was a variety of red roses that flowered all through the year. It is perhaps after these red blossoms that the garden was named Lalbagh.

Architecture of Lalbagh

The Lalbagh is said to be inspired in design by the Mughal Gardens which were quite popular at the time of construction of Lalbagh. The specialists in gardening – the Thigala Community were given the task of beautifying the garden. There are four different entry gates to Lalbagh in all the four directions. The major attractions of the garden include:
Lalbagh Glass House: The glass house in Lalbagh built in 1898, is inspired from the London’s Crystal palace. The Glass House appears as a shining white monument in glass hosting a wide array of colourful flowers in the morning whereas at night it is lit up in golden light creating a view which is a treat to the eyes. It is here that the flower shows are held in the months of January and August every year. Lalbagh has around 1854 species of plants some of which are very rare and exported from different parts of the world. The different species of plants found in the garden include Agathis sp., Amherstia nobilis, Araucaria sp., Averrhoa bilimbi, Bambusa sp., Bixa orellana, Brownea grandiceps, Castanospermum australe, Cola acuminata, Corypha umbraculifera, Couroupita guianensis, Cupressus sp., Eriobotrya japonica, Magnolia sp among others.

Lake in Lalbagh: There also is a lake situated in the vicinity of the Lalbagh. This lake situated in an area of 30 acres is one of the primary reasons for the development of the garden in this area of Bangalore as it makes for a beautiful view within the garden and meets the water requirements for the nourishment of plants in the garden.

Kempegowda Tower: The Kempegowda Tower is a monolithic rock formation in the Lalbagh garden. It is one of the four towers that were built by Kempegowda who apparently built the city of Bangalore.
