It was established by Walchand Hirachand in the year 1940. In its initial days, the airport was used for the Royal Indian Air Force. In the year 2005, the AAI (Airport Authority of India) had started constructing the new Bengaluru International Airport which is about 35 km away from the city. After the establishment of the new airport, HAL airport now serves as a test and research facility.Each day, the airport averages over 70 flights.The airport was originally intended to accommodate 3.5 million passengers a year, but was redesigned to handle 12 million passengers. The redesign resulted in an increase in the size of the terminal, number of aircraft stands, new taxiway layouts and supporting infrastructure.Kempegowda International Airport  has all the features of an intercontinental airport. Indeed, it is the busiest airport of the country, which receives most of the international traffic to India. Stretched over an area of 4000 acres, Kempegowda International Airport   is the leading international and domestic aviation hub of India.The KIA has two Terminal.Both terminals provide access to the rest of India and many cities around the world.The Terminal -1 is Passenger terminal where one can board and De-board domestic as well as international flights. The terminal has a four level building with all the modern amenities. On the first level, one can find baggage and check-in facilities whereas on the second level, you will find domestic and international departure with many retail outlets. The unique thing about the airport is that it can handle approximately 720 aircraft movements in a day as well as 11 million people per annum. Terminal-2 is mainly known as Hajj terminal which is constructed for Hajj pilgrims. The terminal is spread in an area of 1,500 square meters. The terminal also has some prayer rooms for both men and women. Here, you will also find some interesting facilities. Ranging from car parking to hiring, public conveniences to ATMs, communications to duty-free shops, luggage services to medical facilities, every single facility can be availed at Kempegowda International Airport.Other facilities are Information and help desks,A postal service is located on the ground floor.
